Abstract
The culture of reading, and especially newspapers, is less embraced in Africa. People find the writing styles and content in many newspapers not coinciding with the expected. A format that is difficult to comprehend is used thus giving less interest to the readers. In replacement, many people opt for the sensational newspapers that are closely related to the suggested African style and content as that recommended by Francis Kasoma in his theories of Afriethics. In principle, the newspaper style of writing and content is not friendly to many readers in Africa because it is more superficial in the sense that it carries the western style.
Key words: Print media, afriethics, writing style, Africa
Introduction
In many instances, Africa has been condemned to have some a poor reading culture. People and students included, hardly read for leisure but only when they are preparing for a meriting event like an examination. Such kind of culture has been attributed to many things of which some are sarcastic to the African race. Hegel is one among those that addressed some sarcasm. According to him, Africans have no philosophy of their own, except what he considered an amalgamation of other societies’ thoughts. He also added that the African environment was not conducive to form an intelligent mind; and a mind of reading if we are to extend this thought. Instead, he discussed that Africans would only make good artists and athletes.
